Qatar is an oil rich peninsula lying in the Persian Gulf bordering Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. The country is known for its rugged terrains with hills sand dunes and salt flats with scarce vegetation. The oil and the natural gas treasures have transformed the country from a poor fishing town to one of the richest Gulf States. Qatar boasts of a number of islands. Major Cities
Doha is the capital city of Qatar. Other major cities are Al Wakra, Umm Said, Al Khor, Madinat Al-Shamal, Al Ruwais, Al Zubara, Dukhan, Umm Said, Madinat Al-Shamal and Khor al-Udaid. Doha is situated in the Ad Dawhah municipality on the Persian Gulf. Doha is a modern city and a major commercial center with modern seaport, airport and telephone links. Al Wakra between Doha and Umm Said was originally a tiny fishing and pearling village. The Al Wakra Museum is a unique place displaying rich marine life. Umm Said situated on the south of Doha is an important oil exporting port. Some magnificent beaches are found in Umm Said. Al Khor on the north of Doha is famous for its small fishing harbors and exquisite Arabian crafts. Madinat Al-Shamal on the northern part of Arabian Peninsula is an administrative center of the surrounding coastal villages. Al Ruwais is the home of the traditional Bedouin tribes. Al Zubara in the north west of Doha is an important archaeological site. Dukhan located on the west coast of Arab peninsula is popular for its oil riches. Khor Al- Udaid situated on the south of Doha is littered with many sand dunes and is difficult to reach.
Tourist Attractions
There are some interesting tourist attractions in Qatar. The Corniche Bay of Doha is a place of exciting tourist attraction. There is the main port and some fascinating sculptures. The Ethnographic Museum, called, as the Wind Tower House is a magnificent building consisting of open arches. The museum exhibits the traditional collectibles of Doha and Qatar. Qatar National Museum houses the castle of Sheikh Abdullah Bin Qassim Al Thani. The museum attracts with its traditional Qatar artifacts, furniture, jewelry and traditional dresses. The Doha Fort sports some traditional paintings and artworks of Qatar. The Palm Tree Island in Doha is paradisiacal with sandy beaches fringed with coconut palm trees. The place is a popular tourist spot with a number of cafes and restaurants. Some other popular tourist attractions in Doha are Entertainment City, Doha Zoo, The Grand Mosque, Abu Bakir al-Siddiq Mosque, New Amir's Palace, Clock Tower Al-Rumaila Park and Dahl El-Hamam Public Park. Al-Jassasiya hilly region in the northeastern coast of the country is famous for numerous stone carvings and engravingsof the earlier times. With a good many sun kissed beaches Al-Jassasiya and Fuwairet, are popular excursion spots. Al-Wajbah Fort in Qatar is a historical site witnessing the defeat of the ottoman races. Burzan Tower in the Umm Salal Mohammed area is a place worth viewing. Burzan watchtower is a magnificent building of rectangular shape with three levels and an external staircase.
Transport and Accommodtaion
Qatar Airways is the national carrier of Qatar that operates flights from all over the world. The airport of Qatar lies in the southeastern Doha. Qatar does not have a frequent bus service. There are incidents of frequent pickpockets. Roads are well paved but there are many incidents of street accidents due to unsystematic traffic. Private transports are very popular in Qatar. Orange and white color taxis are frequently available. Doha Limousines are the exclusive transports of Doha facilitating speedier travel. Qatar offers quality accommodation facilities with a wide variety of hotels ranging from expensive to cheap. There are also good restaurants that provide delicious cuisines from all parts of the world. Some top class restaurants are situated at Al Sadd Street, Al Mirqab Street and at the Ramada junction of C-Ring Road.
