The sovereign country of Somaliland lies in northwest Somalia in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland is bounded by Somalia to the east, Djibouti to the west, Puntland to the north east and Ethiopia to the south. The country consists of rugged terrains with hills, mountains, offshore islands, coral reefs and mangroves. The juniper forest in the north of Erigavo with an escarpment overlooking the Gulf of Aden is home to diverse species of animals and birds. The wild boar, kudu, warthogs, antelopes and Somali wild ass are typical Somaliland animals that roam around the forest areas of the country.

The plains of Giryad, Sarar and Karaman are the haven of variety of colorful birds. Somaliland was primarily inhabited by the ancient tribal people. The Muslims occupied it during 10th century. Somaliland acquired independence in 1991. The Republic of Somaliland now consists of eighteen administrative regions. The climate is very hot with extreme temperatures. The rainy seasons known as gu and day continues from April to June and Again from October to November.

Hargeisa is the capital city of Somaliland. Other major cities include Burco, Berbera
Borama, Saylac, Ceerigabo, Las Anod, Arabsiyo and Gabiley. Hargeisa lies in a valley area in the northwestern part of Somaliland. The climate is soothing due to the existence of the Gulf of Aden in the surrounding area. Many parts of the city have been damaged by frequent bombings and terrorist attacks. Hargeisa is the financial, administrative and cultural center of Somaliland. The city has undergone great development in the recent years with high rises, residential complexes, hospitals, parks, hotels and restaurants. Burcoin the Togdheer region is the second largest city of Somaliland. The place is famous for being the site of the Habar Yoonis sub-clan of the Isaaq bin Hashim clan.
It was severely damaged due to the 1980 bombings to prevent the rebels seizing the northern areas of Somalia. The Zeila port city on the Gulf of Aden northern Somalia consists of many beautiful offshore islands and coral reefs.

The Golis Mountain Range offers spectacular natural views with rich flora and fauna. The coastal areas along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden contains stunning beaches with beautiful coral reefs and rich marine life. Sa'du-din and Eibat islands located north west of Zaila attracts the adventurous tourist. The Laas Geel rock paintings located in the outskirts of Hargeisa is Somaliland's major tourist attraction. The caves depicting the impressive Neolithic paintings were explored by a French archaeological team in 2002. The paintings bring out the life style of the indigenous tribal people of Somaliland.
