Various majestic rivers like St. John River in Grand Bassa County, Cestos River in Rivercess County, Yar River in Nimba County, St. Paul River and Cavalla River in Maryland County offers paradisiacal beauty to Liberia. In the island arena, the Providence Island in Montserrado County, Dead Island in Maryland County, Tregbe Island in Grand Kru County and the Massatin Island near Lake Piso in Grand Cape Mount County are some of the worth seeing ones. Liberia is said to be the sanctuary of wild life with some of the most rarefied flora and fauna. Sapo National Park located in Sinoe County, is a popular tourist spot for the wild life enthusiasts. The natural and breathe taking beauty of animals such as elephants, viviparous toad, cross river gorilla, water buffalo, lions, zebra duiker, leopards, Diana monkey, Iguanas, chimpanzees and pigmy hippopotamus is a magnificent experience while being on wildlife-watching tour or safari to the park. The park is only accessible on foot and consists of vast expanse of rainforest. Some of the worlds most unusual birds flock in Liberia from parrots to the dancing birds, white-breasted guinea fowl and the dodo birds. Liberia is also known for iron ore mining. Iron ore mining at mountains like Bong Range, Putu Range, Nimba, and Bomi are also popular places of tourists' visit.
A tour to the Firestone Rubber Plantation (50km from Monrovia), which is one of the largest in the world, makes an interesting excursion.
Accommodation
Weasua Air Transport offers reliable flights to Monrovia from Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), Accra (Ghana) and Freetown (Sierra Leone). Again there is the Slok Air International with flights between Monrovia, with Dakar via Freetown and Banjul, and Monrovia and Accra. Bellview Airlines operates flight to and from Lagos via Accra and Abidjan. From outside Africa, there's SN Brussels Airline between Monrovia and Brussels. If traveling overland, the main crossing with Sierra Leone is at Bo (Waterside), with frequent public transport on both sides. There's also a border post to the north at Congo and one northwest of Kolahun. Cargo boats occasionally make the two-day voyages between Guinea and Monrovia and fishing boats run sporadically between Harper and San Pedro (Ivory Coast). Metered taxis are popular local transports and safe for the tourists hire. There are cheap car hires arranged by the local car rental companies. Precautions
With the country recovering from years of disastrous civil war, travel to Liberia is still not safe. The aftermath of civil war affected the country's economy and health giving rise to internal disturbances, hooliganism and corruption. While the government promises maximum help to the tourists but crime is prevalent and potentially violent. Travelers should exercise high levels of caution at all times. Traveling after dark without armed security should be avoided.
